Wharfingers’ 2006 production was a unique and thought-provoking
drama based on George Orwell’s novel, ‘1984’.
It’s deep… it’s dark… and it’s different.
Why ‘1984’? Well, the idea came from the young people
themselves and was subsequently developed and scripted by the
company’s two artistic directors. The exciting and highly
original approach to this classic work was inspired by Wharfingers’
latest drama workshop, led by London based actor and practitioner,
Ceri Ashcroft.
Using aspects of physical theatre, the young players depict a
world in which freedom of speech, and even thought, are a thing
of the past. “Big Brother” is watching everyone and
‘The Party’ rules society with a rod of iron, but
what happens when Winston and Julia decide to join the fabled
‘Brotherhood’ in an attempt to throw off the shackles
of the totalitarian society? ‘1984’ explores the concepts
of love, hate, loyalty, betrayal – in short, what it means
to be human.
