The
2005 Mask Workshop was run over a series of weeks, culminating in
two non-verbal plays to which parents and friends were invited.
It involved all members in the performance, sound (music), lighting
and the creation of the masks themselves, which were unique to each
character.
Costumes and set design were kept to a minimum, so everyone
had to concentrate on describing their characters through shape
and movement and putting the story in context for the audience in
interesting and creative ways.
The young actors worked in two groups to devise their performances;
one a dark, foreboding drama based on the Greek legend of Pandora’s
Box and the other adapted from a folk tale written by a member
of Wharfingers as a scripted play about love, hate and family
relationships.
Everyone had great fun inventing their characters’ facial identities,
moods and expressions and then applying various colours and textures
to the base masks, in an attempt to bring these people (and one
goat!) to life. This they did very effectively.(more)
