What is Wharfingers?
Wharfingers Youth Theatre was
founded in 2002 and is part of Louth Playgoers Society. Our
aim is to give young people with a love of the theatre the
opportunity to meet new friends, learn new skills and, above
all, to have fun! Everyone between the ages of 11 and 18 is
welcome and there are no auditions or any special entry requirements,
other than enthusiasm and commitment.

Philip
Ridley’s tale of adolescent relationships and power struggles
was Wharfingers’ March 2005 production. A story about adolescents
performed by adolescents. Hmmmm. Some members were sceptical at
the first read through, but they changed their minds when they began
to appreciate that it was poignant rather than patronising, emblematic
rather than embarrassing. True, it does deal with some real life
issues, but when escapism meets the cold, hard reality of teenage
gangland, there’s no competition. Escapism has to win.
Here’s how the story goes. High up on a tower block roof,
quiet introvert Jake writes stories in secret to escape his troubled
adolescent existence. Shunned by the other boys as weird, he is
accepted by the girls; one in particular, Polly, who thinks that
he and his stories are cool. Just how cool his next story will have
to be to save him from being dropped over the edge by his adversaries,
he is soon to find out.(more)
